The New Stuff

Sigaram Thodu Review

Congrats to Vikram Prabhu for choosing a variety of scripts in quick succession. Kudos to director Gaurav Narayan who has given his best for his second directorial venture, Sigaram Thodu and UTV for producing it. It is best to describe Sigaram Thodu as a police story. Though we’ve got to see a number of police stories, this one is very different. And it is not the usual crime thriller stuff as well.

We’ve read numerous stories about ATM theft in the newspapers, but it is new to Tamil cinema and the way it has been dealt with is also different. Police officer Sathyaraj loses his leg while on duty and is restricted to office duties in the police department. His desire is to get his son, Vikram Prabhu, into the police department as an officer. But Vikram Prabhu is against it as he feels that his father lost his leg and his mother laid down her life only because of his dad’s job and is against it. Moreover, his girlfriend Monal Gajjar also forbids him from joining the police force.

However, Vikram Prabhu heeds to his dad’s request with the condition that he would quit the job after a month. Did he continue in the police force? What are the problems he encounters as a police officer, forms the rest of Sigaram Thodu. A clear screenplay, excellent ideas, a cute little love story, and every other aspect that a normal film buff would want in a film, has been covered in this film. Vikram Prabhu’s performance is top notch; especially in action sequences. Though the heroine has a good role to play, her time on screen is limited. Sathyaraj as a lame police officer has done a good job, as usual. He has emoted well in places where he wants to see his son achieve what he couldn’t.

Camera work is excellent; especially scenes shot in Haridwar and the stunt sequence shot during the nights in Chennai. Two songs scored by D Imman is good and BGM is excellent. The director has seen to it that almost every scene is logical and there are no clichés, which is an added advantage.
